Hybrid architecture design and “On Premises 2 Cloud” migration for the Media sector.

Panel collaborates in this service design and implementation of hybrid architectures safe and efficient, for one of the main Spanish media with diversified business in events, digital marketing agencies and other services.

THE CHALLENGE

Evolve a classic and heterogeneous Management and Operation system into a comprehensive, scalable, automated and marketable pay-per-use platform. 

 

The challenge posed to us by a relevant national media outlet was to design and implement a technological platform capable of replacing its current system, providing sufficient elasticity to maintain its competitive business processes in the face of great variability in demand, reinforcing its capacity to adapt. agile in the face of regulatory changes and ability to integrate with third parties.

Its current technological infrastructure was deployed in its own data centers, already amortized. Systems teams were perceived as reluctant to changes that require investment in new technologies. Some components of its current technology had high maintenance costs and serious integration limitations.

In short, they were looking for a new technological solution whose architecture supported:

 

  • Hybrid and variable workloads.
  • Lower annual costs for similar loads.
  • Facilities for auditing and process automation.
  • Possibility of generating income through marketing as SaaS.
  • Maintenance performed by the current systems team.

THE SOLUTION

Modify the existing architecture to design and deploy an agile, secure, efficient, adaptable and integrated hybrid platform.

As a cornerstone, the team Panel Sistemas promoted the evolution towards a hybrid architecture. The built platform is secure, stable, adaptable and robust, being able to deploy components in Cloud modes (GCP-Google Cloud Platform) and in the local data center (Vmware VDC).

The modularity of the new design has allowed us to build a hybrid platform, in which “on premises” components coexist with “cloud” components. All components have been reviewed in the strategic axes: security, computing, storage, networking, backup and observability.

For the construction of the new platform, as well as for the migration of each of the chosen components, exhaustive procedures for commissioning, version change, security (vulnerabilities), etc. were established.

These procedures were implemented by a DevSecOps team that managed the life cycle of each component based on automatic infrastructure deployment, continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/DC) tailored to each case.

With agile practices, the continuous improvement of the systems in question was sustained, providing achievable proposals, executing them and involving all teams (systems and business) in learning from the results to continue evolving. The good results achieved consolidated the methodology throughout the team and mitigated reluctance towards the use of new technologies.

The Service Management Office (SMO) was reinforced with the definition of SLI/SLO/SLA metrics, and their calculation was automated as a basis to ensure compliance with agreements (SLA), monitoring of indicators (SLI) and of service objectives (SLO).

Panel's experience in management of systems in operation, and design of architectures and modular systems, together with the multidisciplinary contribution of the members of the Team, has allowed the process of transferring information to the client's technical interlocutors to be fast and very satisfying.
